The National Human Right Commission has embarked on one week of Activism to campaign against Rape and all other forms of Gender based Violence
According to the information obtained by SHO PEN ONLINE the Programme which is stated to hold between 15 and 19th of June is aimed at incessanting the cases of rape, domestic violence and killings against women and girl child in Nigeria.
The Members of Kwara State NHRC today joined by volunteers and staff members of the Olive Community Development Initiative had a protest visit to the office of Kwara State First lady, Mrs Olufoluke Abdulrazaq.
In her opening remark the Kwara State NHRC coordinator, Barrister Mrs. Jumoke Olaoye Esq. Said the One week Programme is an initiative designed to create awareness and sensitize women especially against the culture of keeping silence when someone molest them or violates their rights.
According to her : " Women and the girl child are human being, they are entitled to the rights Guaranteed by Chapter 2 and 4 of the 1999 constitution amended which includes : the rights to life, right to movement and right to dignity. These rights cannot he divided, transferred or separated"
Barrister jumoke therefore enjoins all women and girl child to be more outspoken, the Era of stigimatization is gone and Culture which is repugnant to natural Justice, and equity is gone when we win the culture of silence we have won the war. She added
Speaking with our correspondence in ilorin, The representative of Olive Community Development initiative, Mrs. Mojoyin Adewuyi, said the communities need to be sensitised on the dangers of their behaviours.
"keeping quiet have been affecting the families and victims of rape, we need to be more outspoken in order to fight against the issue of rape". mojoyin said
Lastly she Urges the Government to implement laws that will protect Women in Both private and Public Places and also make sure rapist are prosecuted.
