For about a month now, the initiators of the #VAPPKwara campaign— Coalition of Advocates Against Violence (CO-ADAV), under the convening leadership of Messrs. Atunde Ahmed executed the long anticipated "Mask the Street Kids" project. The project was put in place by the organization in order to in her own little way ameliorate the exposure and dangers faced by the street kids and the homeless, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic period.
Speaking at the venue of execution, Messrs. Atunde noted that it meant a lot to him that the CO-ADAV/VAPPKwara crew could pull the project through, given the economic hardship, and are more than grafeful to the donors and supporters of the project.
He told media correspondent on the scene that: "Today, I, my allies and friends of the Coalition of Advocates Against Violence executed the "Mask the Street Kids Campaign". We educated the Al-Majiri boys and girls about the novel Coronavirus. We informed them about measures that is needed to be taken for them protect themselves and their neighbors. We particularly educated them about the importance of using the face masks during this period...".
Added to that, the team was able to provide facemasks and fopd relieves to the street community. It was in the end, a happy day for all present.
Commenting the laudability of the project, Mr. Afolabi Abidemi, who is the Digital Lead for #VAPPKwara commended his boss for leading such a thoughtful project, stating that "the world needs more of Atunde and the CO-ADAV crew". He further reiterated the need for the street peeps to avoid crowded places, form a habit of washing their hands and wearing the masks always.
"You never can know who is carrying the virus. Protect yourself and don't indulge in risky behaviour that may endanger others. Wear your masks and wash your hands" he noted aptly.
All in all, the CO-ADAV team were grateful to all and sundry who partook in the project both online and offline and wishes to call on the Kwara state community to support the #VAPPKwara Campaign which is targeted at the domestication of the "Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015)" in Kwara.
Recall that, some months ago, the CO-ADAV team via their twitter handle— @Vappkwara, initiated a series of conversations on the need to end violent related crimes in Kwara through proper orientation and policy development. Pursuant to that, the team had made laudable efforts to connect and network with valuable stakeholders and community leaders to support the cause by providing an enabling environment for the federal legislation (VAPP Act) to come to stay in Kwara.
The team had also being in conversations and meetings with legislators of the Kwara State House of Assembly, particularly through the Chairman House Committee on Justice— Hon. AGF Salaudeen, and Hon. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba, Member representing Kaiama/ Kemanji/ Wojibe State Constituency, who have both together with other relevant partners in progress received draft bills of the premodified VAPP Act with assurances to work on them.
It is the belief of CO-ADAV that a VAPP law in Kwara would place the state on the pedestal of global reforms to rape laws, and enable to state to add a voice to the global war against Female Genital Mutilation, Domestic Violence and seemingly violent crimes.
