The special Covid-19 taskforce of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Kwara State Axis, has yesterday, Friday, May 2, 2020, commenced the distribution of palliatives to vulnerable Nigerian students in Kwara state who remain at various off-campus residential hostels.
It's no more news that the novel coronavirus disease is now with us in Nigeria. As a preventive measure, President, Muhammed Buhari, ordered a total lockdown on some parts of the country, and halt of some social activities, of which academics is one.
Following the footstep of the President, some Governors also mandated a partial lockdown on their states, and shut down certain activities. This led to the closure of schools nationwide - federal, state and private respectively.
While many students vacated various lodges on the campus as ordered by the authority, some still remain at their residential hostels off campus across all the institutions in the state for different reasons.
The Covid-19 pandemic, ravaging the world, has, no doubt, impacted negatively on the political, economic and social systems of many countries. The economic impact is the most feasible, since it is the superstructure other social structures rest upon. Many individuals have had their livelihood affected with the ban on certain businesses and movement. Students are no exception.
According to the chairman NANS COVID-19 task force, comrade Abdulsalam Abdulwasiu ( Wizkiu ) while speaking with SHO PEN ONLINE, He said it is commendable that government at all levels, especially the Kwara state government, rose proactively to initiate policies to curtail the pandemic and consequently relieve the citizens from hunger. Hence, Nigerian students are optimistic that with the measure put in place, there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
It's in view of this that NANS Kwara set up a committee, following the order of the National President, Comr. Bamidele Danielson Akpan, to cater for the well-being of Nigerian students who couldn't go back to their respective states when the government banned entry into most states. Some of these students, mostly from Lagos, Ogun and Abuja chose to play safe because their regions have recorded cases at the time Kwara was still free of the virus.
The committee yesterday, commenced the distribution of palliatives to students of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University Malete, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin, College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies and College of Education Ilorin.
According to the information obtained by our correspondence, Other schools which include College of Education Oro, College of Education Lafiaji, College of Health Technology Offa, School of Nursing Ilorin and school of Nursing Okeode will be subsequently captured in the next batch of distribution.
The NANS kwara COVID-19 task force appreciates the kind gesture that was received from the state government as facilitated by a one-time NANS Kwara Chairman turn Politician, Comrade Musbau Esinrogunjo.
The committee promised to abide with the law of the NCDC especially that of social adistancing, while performing her duties in cushioning the economic effects of the lockdown on Nigerian students.
