COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN KWARA STATE AND MATTERS ARISING

by - Esinrogunjo Musbau

Fellow Kwarans, it is no longer news that Covid-19 is a deadly virus that has caused lots of deaths across the globe. It has grounded economic activities in the entire universe. The disastrous nature of the disease prompted the World Health Organization(WHO) to formally declare it a "PANDEMIC".

In Nigeria, the alarming proportion with which the virus is spreading is worrisome. You will recall that Mr President directed the lock-down of Lagos, Ogun and FCT to curb the spread of the virus. Most states of the federation equally joined in coming up with measures to curtail it's spread.

In Kwara State, the Government did everything humanly possible to ensure that the virus didn't enter the State. In doing this, the State Government, apart from setting up a high powered Task Force went as far as taking up proactive steps to deal with the pandemic if it eventually gets it way in to the State of Harmony. This is the practical demonstration of "leadership". Hence I humbly want to salute His Excellency, Gov Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State for doing his best to ensure that the State does not have any case of Corona Virus.

However, it is very unfortunate that all efforts put across by the State Government to ensure that we don't hear anything about the virus proved abortive as it is now in the public glare that the State has witnessed a victim of Covid-19. Base on the report so far, a Professor at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital was fingered as the brain behind the incursion of the virus into the State. To this end, the management of UITH suspended the Professor and committee was constituted to investigate the matter and come up with  recommendations. Now the emphasis is on contact tracing of individuals who had contacts with the deceased so as not to make the virus go rampant in the State.

At this juncture, I want to call on the good people of Kwara State to remain calm and cooperate with the government to curb the spread of this epidemic. I equally want to appeal that we should not panic over this unfortunate development. We should rather see this as a trial from God Almighty with the hope that we shall get out of it in no distant time. We should use this period for sober reflection, self-assessment and be steadfast in prayers. We should follow the preventive measures reeled out by health personnel which has to do with our personal hygiene like constant washing of hands, use of sanitizers, face masks, social distancing and promptly reporting to hospitals in case of any symptoms related to Covid-19. If we do this, we're going to see light at the end of the tunnel.

On the issue of palliatives, I equally want to salute the State Government and other spirited individuals for deeming it fit to provide foodstuffs to assuage the plight of the vulnerable in this critical period. It is pertinent to note that the committee saddled with this responsibilities are humans. They may likely make mistakes in one way or the other while carrying the task of distributing the food items. It is our duties to support them to do the needful. Let's not crucify them please.

Sadly, some individuals are trying to bring politics into this fight against covid-19 pandemic. For goodness sake, must we bring politics in everything we do as a people? This is not the time to play politics with human lives. This is the time for us to put all hands on deck to defeat this deadly virus in the State of Harmony. Government alone cannot do it. Our health workers alone can't do it. We must all join hands to show corona virus the exit door in the State.

Finally, it is my sincere prayers that Allah(SWT) will bring succour to us, grant shifaa to those affected, prevent us from contacting it and make it easy for the leadership of the State to combat the virus headlong.

God bless you all.
