Police has been an active term from the time in memorial, it's a term used to described a process of controlling people by making sure the rules and regulations is being adhere to. In another words, policing is a global engagement from across the world with different dimensions of operating within the contents of established laws which varies from country to country. Globally, no Nation without her policing system as to the protection of laws and maintaining of orders.
However, Nigeria is not in exception of this global content, which implies that, Nigeria is a sovereign state, and her responsibility among, which importantly is to protect lives and prosperity.
Primarily, the responsibility of government at all levels is to protect lives and property as it was enriched in the Nigerian constitution, ditto powered the Nigeria Police force as a sole agency to detect crimes, arrest, detain and prosecute offenders.
As a result, many among Nigerians perceived Nigeria Police Force as a system that shed from her primary responsibility, which is, maintaining laws and orders of which birthed subjecting the force to public condemnation and harsh criticism from the end of the citizen.
Accurately, the perception was not wrongly perceived as it's clearly shown how true and wrongly the system is, in another hands, many who have had favorable contacts with the force, were with the opinion that the force is doing her best in policing the country. In making the perceptions, to become two side of a coin. At this juncture, it should be noted that the force is doing her best in policing the most populous country in Africa in the best way among her contemporaries. Nigeria remains the Giant of Africa.
Policing as a wide content to manage, for it to practically serve its purposes there should be a huge concern on it practicality. Nigeria police is endowed with highly intelligent, dedicated, committed, gallant, perseverance and resourceful service men and women, whose dedication to National service is precedence.
However, there are bad eggs amidst the good ones that result posing challenges on the integrity and professionalism of the force.
However, for a Nigeria free crimes society, the stakeholders concerned - government, security agencies and the citizens - should prioritized the protection of lives and property cum maintaining laws and orders. Particularly, policing with integrity, high professionalism, technology driven policing, community centered policing, well-structured operational frameworks and revamping the image of the force through good and trustworthy public relationship, as these would go a long way in position the force on a global race, and subjecting her to global appraisal and commendations.
In extension, criminals are not ghost and Nigeria police are not spirit, for Nigeria police to excel in policing the country, beyond game blaming all hands must be on deck. Furnish the force with useful information and be supportive in raiding out criminals elements from their respective sources therefore, harnessing the potential of the force. Lastly, security is everybody business.
