Since the index case was recorded in February 27, 2020 and subsequent spread of the novel but deadly corona virus (COVID-19) in Nigeria, federal and state governments as well as non-governmental organizations have vigorously been fighting the further spread of the scourge with confirmed cases of 131 as at 9:46pm on Monday, March 30, 2020.
Consequent upon the above, the Igbomina Youth Assembly considered it expedient to activate its core value of social responsibility which tends toward community development. Recognising the importance of timely and relevant information, the Assembly commends the decision and directive of Kwara State Taskforce Committee on Covid-19. Movement restriction and social distancing are some of the recommendations of the United Nations to curtailing the dreadful virus.
In this trying time, the Assembly is not unaware of the negative effect of this on individual and family economy but appeal to the sons and daughters of Igbomina land in particular and Kwarans in general to adhere strictly to preventive and precautionary directive to stay safe. The Assembly commends the doggedness of the kind-hearted individuals, corporate establishments and responsible politicians that have provided and yet providing succour to the vulnerable at such time like this. Posterity will definitely have you on its right side when the roll call is made. It is not too late for others to join this bandwagon of humanitarian support.
However, the Assembly calls on the Kwara state government to think through cushioning the adverse effect of the partial lockdown. Surge in the price of food occasioned by the development also calls for great concern and attention of the government because this is the only denominator that keeps the body together at the moment. Government also need to address the conduct of the law enforcement agents detailed to enforce the compliance but turn around using the opportunity to exploit Kwarans. This is necessary to forestall possible resistance from Kwarans who may not be able to bear the burden any longer.
Finally, the recommend that individuals who may want to help the vulnerable survive this trying time should devise means of reaching out to them in their neighbourhood and be one another’s keeper. Everyone, excluding no one, should endeavour to conform to all safety measures against Covid-19, as we hope for a new dawn devoid of disease soonest.
